PAGE DESIGN

Plaques and Certificates Sponsored by Kilgore News Herald

Division 1
Dailies 5,865 Circulation and Above

1. The Daily Sentinel (Nacogdoches)

More graphs; clear comicals. Good readability and photos; color wonderful. Use of color on front pages of sections good; would love to see more for added visual interest. By far the winner. Excellent design throughout!

2. The Terrell Tribune

Page design and readability very good; maybe more graphics and artwork. Layout effective, but not aesthetically appealing; more colorful graphics; font variation on front page may help. Sports section design is excellent.

3. The Paris News

Good coverage of City Council. Too many pics on front page of people at mike; zeroing in on one or two would have been more interesting. Front page design stands out, very good; paper is easy to read. Layout done well, but get rid of white space; features, graphics, columns look good. Good Life section layout and color.

4. Texarkana Gazette

Too much white space on front page. Use of color and font variation good.

Division 2
Dailies Circulation Up to 5,864

1. Waxahachie Daily Light

Good readability, innovation, color, graphics, design features, typography, photos and other artwork.

2. Henderson Daily News

Good readability, color, graphics, design features, typography, photos and other artwork.

3. Athens Daily Review

Good graphics and design features.

Division 3
Semi-Weeklies

1. Wise County Messenger (Decatur)

Design is one of this newspaper’s consistent strengths. Clean and impressive, with use of white space, big photos and graphics. The design makes the paper quite distinctive. Below the fold front page could use more interesting design elements — kind of boring compared with top.

2. Mansfield News-Mirror

This is a clean, classy looking paper. Front page looks simple but elegant. Opinion page is professional. Life page could use some color. Centerpiece photo on sports section cover is great – good composition and action caught in mid-air.

3. Hood County News (Granbury)

This is a nice looking paper. Front page is clean, main stores get good play and design. Features page is strong. Forum page looks professional. Football Preview has a strong design and color. Good reproduction enhances the entire product.

4. Burleson Star

Design is balanced and readable, although not particularly innovative. The section fronts don’t look that different. Some variety would be welcome.

Division 4
Weeklies 2,600 Circulation and Above

1. The Wylie News

Very good design throughout. Color on front page is coordinated. Professional looking opinion page. Terrific graphic on sports page. Colors harmonize. Spotlight page looks a bit bland – top photos look washed-out. But page has a balanced design.

2. Azle News

Front page looks cluttered – news digest seems awkward on right side. Photos are of similar size and none are “grabbers.” Opinion page is professional looking, but editorials looked stacked on top of each other in three columns. Good photos on sports page. Society page needs fewer photos and more white space. The page feels crammed.

3. Mineola Monitor

Nice looking front page. Commentary page looks boring – any graphics? Sports page is awkward with copy jumping around the photo – it’s hard to read. Photo page is pretty dark. How about some white space to let the page breathe?

4. Cedar Creek Pilot (Gun Barrel City)

Cluttered front page – ad at bottom detracts. Lakeplex Loves Results font is hard to read on sports page.

Division 5
Weeklies 1,501 Circulation to 2,599

1. Iowa Park Leader

Good design is this paper’s strength and gives it a distinctive personality.

2. The Springtown Epigraph

Front page looks cluttered. Professional looking opinion page. The Family and Life page has very good photos – too bad they’re not in color. Sports section looks clean. Big stories and photos add impact.

3. Rockwall County News

Too much on the front page – too many photos. Four stories, a cutline, eight photos, an index – it’s dizzying. Good sports page

4. The Marlin Democrat

Front page needs to focus on a story of interest. Design is safe – and boring. The section fronts aren’t distinctive. Layout is similar throughout. Some variety would help.

Division 6
Weeklies Up to 1,500 Circulation

1. The Leonard Graphic

Clean, elegant front page design. Good photos, color and reproduction throughout.

2. Alvarado Star

Good, big photo on front page. Opinion page needs some graphics. Sports page is lively.

3. Crowley Star

Front page feels cluttered – masthead is hemmed in. Commentary page needs a graphic for interest. Big photos on sports page add impact. Lifestyles page is just plain boring.

4. Joshua Star

Too much clutter on front page. “Dig It” package is effective. Inside pages feel crammed. Focusing on bigger photos might help.
