Division 1
Dailies 5,865 Circulation and Above

1. The Paris News/Sam Craft

1. Excellent composition. Captures the “only us in the crowd” feeling of young love. Good use of light and dark contrast. Lovely photo. 2. Excellent framing of the shot, blurring out background clutter and focusing on her face.

2. Texarkana Gazette/Aaron Street

1. Interesting color makes this stand out from the ordinary rainbow shot. 2. Great composition, capturing the kid’s priceless expression.

3. The Daily Sentinel (Nacogdoches)/Andrew D. Brosig

1. Good capturing of action, color. 2. Great angle! Good composition.

4. The Lufkin Daily News/Joel Andrews

1. Good composition. Captures the emotion of the moment. 2. Good composition.

Division 2
Dailies Circulation Up to 5,864

1. Waxachie Daily Light/Neal White

“For the Children” – I really enjoy the symbolic detail. The blurred Martin Luther King in the background is a very nice touch. “American Pride” – This is a very clear picture! To capture a child that is being still long enough for that cute of a picture is talent!

2. Henderson Daily News/ Kevin Shaw & Hughes Ellis

“Duty Calls” – You can tell the photographer placed himself in a good position to capture the firefighter through the window. This really sets the picture and makes it very artistic. “Game Time” – Action shot! Entertaining that he caught the coach at that moment.

3. Athens Daily Review/Brad Bennett

“Final Touches” – Didn’t think this was a very entertaining picture. It’s just some guys welding. “Thrashin’ Ceder Creek Lake” – It’s neat that he caught the guy skateboarding at that moment. Decent action picture.

Division 3
Semi-Weeklies

1. Wise County Messenger (Decatur)/Joe Duty

1. At first I did not like the full frontal, smiling head, but it goes with the caption, “Faces of Hope.” 2. I like how it is kind of symbolic of life’s journey from birth represented by the baby to death represented by the body being taken out.

2. Hood County News (Granbury)/Mary Vinson & Jeremy Enlow

1. The photographer did a good job in capturing the coyotes leaping. A nice image. 2. This picture has good color and good reproduction. Good composition, angle and color.

3. Mansfield News-Mirror/Amanda Rogers & Nicholas Sakelaris

1. The picture goes with the headline, so I thought it was a pretty good job. Cute picture, good composition. 2. The picture’s okay, it’s a little boring. Good close-up showing officer’s face. Flash was too bright. The smaller photo of backs is boring and doesn’t add anything.

4. The Gatesville Messenger

1. It is an odd looking position that the boy was captured in. Too blurry, color is washed out. 2. Beautiful picture of the sky. It looks like it goes on forever. Well planned shot to capture in the early morning.

Division 4
Weeklies 2,600 Circulation and Above

1. The Wylie News/Emily Jones

1. Good design above the fold, but the foreground of the fireworks photo got lost in blurriness. 2. Artistic shot of the reflection in the sunglasses. Nice!

2. Mount Vernon Optic-Herald/Susan Reeves

Good quality of cutline, especially the headlines. 1. Cute pic, but a lot of clutter in this photo detracts from the players. 2. Pretty shot. Background looks very bright and washes out the color some.

3. Azle News/Jeri Field & Edwin Newton

Lots of things competing for attention – better to focus on one or two kids. Good color. 2. Cute pic, well framed. Good color.

4. Cedar Creek Pilot (Gun Barrel City)/Charles Stiff & Jason Larson

1. Good composition and timing. Too bad it’s a bit dark. 2. The lines (antenna and pole) detract from the subjects. Otherwise a good angle of the students – if only you could get rid of the background clutter.

Division 5
Weeklies 1,501 Circulation to 2,599

1. Iowa Park Leader

Excellent reader interest. Excellent composition. Excellent quality of cutline. Excellent innovation. Excellent reproduction.

2. The McGregor Mirror

Excellent reader interest. Excellent innovation. Good quality of cutline.

3. The Farmersville Times/Autumn Barton

Good composition. Good quality of cutline. Good reproduction.

4. The Springtown Epigraph

Gliding past the full moon – Neat picture, but could have cut it with more emphasis on the moon and gliders.

Division 6
Weeklies Up to 1,500 Circulation

1. Crowley Star/Tom Beesley

1. Good angle on Easter egg hunt photo – gets right into the action. 2. Nicely composed photo.

2. The Leonard Graphic/Betsy Blevins

1. We wish the kids in the background had been a bit sharper. 2. Good photo. Background is a bit dark.

3. Joshua Star/Darlene Moore & Dawn Eierdam

1. Cute photo – flash caused some harsh shadow, but expressions on boy’s and lamb’s faces are priceless. The color really faded out. 2. Too dark. Her face looks ghostly next to the black background.

4. Alvarado Star/Michael Rayburn

1. Good light, dark and gray tones. Grainy reproduction detracts. 2. Cute pic – angle captures boy’s face.
